The buy-Canadian mood fuelled by trade tensions with the United States is extending to Halloween, CTV News reports.
An Angus Reid survey for Nextdoor Canada found 59% of Canadians see supporting local or Canadian businesses as a priority for Halloween, from pumpkins to costumes and treats. The figure rose to 68% in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and 69% in Atlantic Canada.
A Winnipeg grocer who has put Made in Canada labels on his shelves said it was hard to find sweets that were genuinely Canadian, rather than just prepared in Canada. Sylvain Charlebois of Dalhousie University's Agri-Food Analytics Lab said many treats were made in Canada but by foreign, often American, companies, and that truly Canadian options tended to cost more.
The same survey found 88% of Canadians plan to spend under $100 on Halloween this year.
