Cuba's ambassador to Canada has urged Ottawa to keep backing a UN motion against the US embargo as Washington steps up pressure on the island, Global News reports, citing The Canadian Press.
Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz said he was confident Canada would stand with Cuba and that the tightened blockade was costing lives. The UN General Assembly votes next week on the resolution, which Canada has supported many times before.
The Trump administration cut off Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba in January and has threatened tariffs on countries that supply fuel. Malmierca said some countries had been warned their US trade or aid could suffer if they backed the motion. US ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz has urged countries to vote against it.
Global Affairs Canada said its position was still under consideration and repeated calls for Havana to release political prisoners.
