US health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr has been condemned for remarks at a campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in which he wrongly claimed that Arabs do not produce science or literature or win major prizes, The Guardian reports.
He was speaking on Monday in support of Mike Rogers, the Republican Senate candidate trailing Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who is Muslim, in polls. An Associated Press factcheck found Arab scientists and writers have won or been shortlisted for the Nobel, Fields and Wolf prizes Kennedy listed.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations called the remarks racist and bigoted. Democratic congresswoman Hillary Scholten said they were disgraceful. Kennedy made the comments while attacking the Muslim Brotherhood, branches of which the US has designated as terrorist organisations.
