Winnipeg police have stopped using Crime Stoppers after learning that some information from the city was caught up in a data breach at the anonymous tip organisation, Global News reports.
A CBC investigation published on Wednesday reported that more than 1.5 million tips had been affected by the breach. The Winnipeg Police Service said it would keep the suspension in place while it reviews what has come to light and assesses new safeguards being put in place by Crime Stoppers and its service providers.
Police stressed that Crime Stoppers is an independent organisation that runs its own systems. In the meantime, people can report information online or through the police tip line, and officers say they will try to honour requests to remain anonymous where possible. Toronto Crime Stoppers paused its tip line earlier this week over the same breach.
