Two people have been arrested in Hong Kong after two victims handed a total of HK$900,000 to a woman who said she was locked out of her home, Hong Kong Free Press reports.
A Tuen Mun resident reported on Monday that a woman had approached her saying she had lost her keys and needed cash for a locksmith. The scammer then sought bigger sums by online transfer, and asked for bank cards and an identity card, police said.
Inspector Chu Yung-fai said a similar case was investigated last year.
A 43-year-old woman was arrested in Tuen Mun on suspicion of obtaining property by deception, and a 77-year-old man in Sham Shui Po on suspicion of money laundering. Police urged the public not to give money or personal details to strangers.
