The Japanese parking and car-sharing firm Park24 will pay ¥3,000 in cash or gift cards to Times Car users affected by a recent data breach, the Japan Times reports.
The company said about 6.62 million accounts were compromised. Payments will go to about 1.46 million accounts whose identity document images, including driving licences, were transferred out. Park24 said the images were encrypted and could not be viewed straight away, and that it would deal with any actual losses case by case.
The payments are expected to cost about ¥4.4bn, and the company plans to book a ¥5.5bn extraordinary loss for the year ending this month.
A law firm is organising affected users for a damages lawsuit. Lawyer Yuki Makino called the payment too low given the risk of identity theft, and said more than 90,000 people had signed up online.
