Isamaa promises to close Estonia’s climate ministry and set up scandals inquiry

·

Estonia's opposition Isamaa party has set out its plans for the 2027 parliamentary election, promising to close the Ministry of Climate and create a commission of inquiry into political scandals, ERR News reports.

Party leader Urmas Reinsalu told a council meeting in Tallinn that the campaign had begun, and accused the governing Reform Party, Eesti 200 and the opposition Social Democrats of dishonesty under the Kallas and Michal governments.

Isamaa's pledges include letting citizens trigger early elections, as in Latvia, making it a crime to lie to the proposed inquiry, and closing the border with Russia. It also promises a supplementary budget with spending cuts starting with ministers' and MPs' pay, scrapping the car tax, cutting VAT on basic foods to 13% from July 2027, and repealing the Climate Act.
