Voters in British Columbia are going to the polls on Saturday in a snap election called two years early by NDP premier David Eby, CTV News reports.
Mr Eby first said he needed a new mandate to deal with pressure from US President Donald Trump, but later said the vote was needed to break a deadlocked legislature in which the NDP held a one-seat majority. His main challenger is interim Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson, who has brought back several MLAs who had left the party. Green leader Emily Lowan is fighting her first provincial election.
Polls are open from 8am to 8pm local time. Election-day ballots will be counted by hand, and mail-in votes about two weeks later. More than 891,000 people voted in advance, about 24% of registered voters.
