Nigeria needs about N104bn a year for health security plan, NCDC says

·

Nigeria needs about N104.4 billion a year to carry out its national health security plan and remains seriously underfunded to prevent and tackle disease outbreaks, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has said, Premium Times reports. Director-General Jide Idris said in a statement on Monday that the country's updated health security action plan for 2025 to 2029 is expected to cost roughly N522 billion over five years.

He said not all of the work is funded through the NCDC, but the figure showed the scale of investment required. The plan brings together government ministries, development partners and civil society, and was drawn up after the first plan expired, with weak funding identified as one of its main problems. Idris said the N10 billion emergency fund recently approved by President Bola Tinubu should be viewed against those wider needs.
