Nigeria's African Democratic Congress has said it will hold Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu responsible for any violence against opposition members as it prepares to launch its presidential campaign in the state on Wednesday, Premium Times reports. The warning followed the state government's decision on Monday to seal an ADC campaign office in Sokoto, citing a dispute over ownership and security concerns.
ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi accused the government of intimidation and said officials who obstruct lawful campaigning should expect legal consequences. The state's lands commissioner, Nasiru Dantsoho, said records showed the building belonged to Savannah Bank and that it would stay sealed while the deposit insurance agency was consulted. A spokesman for the party's governorship candidate alleged the government had demanded ₦30 million for a venue, a claim the newspaper could not confirm. The ruling APC has disputed claims of political violence.
