Construction of the 102-kilometre Querétaro-Irapuato railway in Mexico's Bajío region is a quarter complete a year after work began, Mexico News Daily reports, citing the federal trains agency ATTRAPI. The US$5.3 billion line, which broke ground in September 2025, is expected to serve up to two million people and will have five stations, including Celaya, Salamanca and Irapuato.
President Claudia Sheinbaum toured the works at the weekend and said rail building was creating jobs and growth. The project is part of a federal plan for 2,500km of passenger and freight track by 2030. The opposition PAN governors of Querétaro and Guanajuato thanked her for backing the scheme. Alstom is building the trains in Hidalgo. The line will eventually link with the Mexico City-Querétaro route, which Sheinbaum said is roughly a third complete.
