Manufacturers in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, are struggling to restart production more than three years after war broke out between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Al Jazeera reports. According to Sudan's industry ministry, about 1,800 industrial facilities have been damaged, including 650 factories that were completely destroyed.
Khartoum was one of the country's main manufacturing centres before the conflict, producing food, textiles and other goods. The army fully retook the city last year, but the sector has not been rebuilt. Factory owners told the broadcaster that machinery, raw materials and stock were looted or destroyed, and that power cuts, damaged roads and higher import costs are holding back even those whose buildings survived. One sweets maker said his plant was running at 40% of its former capacity, leaving workers without jobs and consumers paying more.
