AI-generated video of Victorian Liberal leader sparks row in state election

·

Victorian Labor has been accused of a smear campaign after posting an AI-generated video showing Liberal leader Jess Wilson warning of costly US-style healthcare, words she never said, the Guardian reports. The clip, published on Labor's social media accounts on Saturday ahead of the state election, uses a convincing imitation of her voice and shows her holding a bill listing supposed US medical charges.

Labor says the video reflects comments Wilson made last month when, asked whether her plan to pay private hospitals to carry out public elective surgery would Americanise the system, she replied that it would not be bad. Premier Ben Carroll defended the video on ABC Radio Melbourne. Wilson called it a desperate smear and said her party had no plans to Americanise healthcare in Victoria. The episode has added to debate about AI-generated material in political advertising.
