Former Hong Kong minister urges release of Wang Fuk Court inspection report

·

A former Hong Kong housing minister has called on the government to publish its structural inspection report on Wang Fuk Court, the Tai Po estate devastated by fire last November, Hong Kong Free Press reports. Anthony Cheung, a former secretary for transport and housing, wrote in the Ming Pao newspaper that releasing it would ease doubts among owners who have refused the government's offer to buy their flats.

More than 93% of owners had signed sale agreements by mid-October, and officials have said legal measures could be used for the remainder. Cheung warned that special legislation for compulsory purchase could clash with property rights protected by the Basic Law and lead to lengthy judicial reviews. The fire, which broke out during renovation work on 26 November 2025, killed 168 people and displaced more than 4,600 residents.
