Political groups on both sides of the debate over artificial intelligence spent millions of dollars on Tuesday's US midterm elections, with mixed results, TechCrunch reports. Two industry-aligned committees spent a combined $4.8m backing Darline Graham's Senate bid in South Carolina, which failed. One of them, American Mission, is the Republican arm of Leading the Future, a group backed by OpenAI president Greg Brockman and Andreessen Horowitz.
Its Democratic arm had more success, supporting Florida congressman Jared Moskowitz, who was re-elected. Public First, which is backed by Anthropic and favours stronger safeguards, saw several Republicans it supported lose but did better with Democrats. Guardrails Alliance, which campaigns against AI industry money in politics, spent over $1m each opposing two candidates who were defeated. TechCrunch notes the effect of this spending is hard to separate from the wider Democratic wave.
