Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he wants to rework the agreement to hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, after opposition from Washington, The Guardian reports.
In an interview with the Economist, Burnham said the UK was talking to the United States about a new arrangement that would better address American concerns, and suggested the recent US deal with Denmark over Greenland might offer a model for the Diego Garcia military base.
The treaty signed under Keir Starmer would have transferred sovereignty to Mauritius while the UK kept the joint UK-US base on a 99-year lease. It has been stalled since President Donald Trump said in September that he did not support it. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has said payments to Mauritius are suspended while a compromise is sought. Under the Greenland deal, the island stays Danish but the US can expand its military presence.
