Dr Jennifer Shuford, the second-in-command and top medical officer at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is to step down six months after taking the job, according to an internal agency email seen by The Guardian.
Donald Trump named Shuford in April as one of four senior leaders brought in to steady the agency after the previous director, Susan Monarez, left less than a month into her tenure and publicly called the health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr's instructions unscientific.
In a statement circulated by the CDC director, Dr Erica Schwartz, Shuford said she was leaving to spend more time with her family and thanked Trump and Kennedy for the opportunity. She is expected to leave on 12 November, after next week's midterm elections.
