Egypt's parliament has given President Abdel Fattah El Sisi authority to send troops to Saudi Arabia, clearing the final constitutional step towards a possible deployment against the Houthis, The National reports, citing an MP close to the government.
The vote was held by roll call in a closed session in Cairo on Monday, the third sitting on the issue in nine days, and the result was not published. Sending the army on a combat mission abroad needs the backing of two-thirds of MPs.
The mandate leaves the timing and scope of any deployment to the president, who has said Egypt will act only if Riyadh asks; no formal Saudi request has been announced. Mr El Sisi sought the mandate on 17 October. Nearly 500 MPs asked to speak during the debate, and most parties backed the request.
