A nurse was killed and another health worker badly injured while responding to a suspected Ebola case in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the World Health Organization has said, Nigeria's Premium Times reports.
The attack happened on Saturday in Bafwasende, in Tshopo province in the east of the country. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus offered condolences and said health workers must be able to work safely, while the agency's Africa director condemned the violence and blamed misinformation and fear.
Responders have faced repeated threats and attacks during the outbreak of Bundibugyo virus disease, which was declared in May. WHO figures show the DRC had recorded 9,964 confirmed cases and 4,841 deaths by 24 October, with the outbreak active in 66 health zones. Cases have also been confirmed in Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria.
