The far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who lost Sunday's presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has reportedly left Brazil and is heading for the United States, The Guardian reports, citing several Brazilian media outlets.
The news site Metrópoles, quoting people close to the family, said he was on a plane, while allies told Folha de S Paulo the departure had been organised by a lawyer close to the family. CNN Brasil said he had left with his wife and two daughters early on Tuesday. None of the reports has been officially confirmed.
Bolsonaro had not been seen since Monday and failed to meet a Tuesday morning deadline to hand his passport to federal police, after a supreme court justice cancelled it in a criminal case. In a video on Monday he said he had never thought about leaving the country. He has not conceded defeat.
