The US ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, has indicated that Ottawa might be held responsible if the Republicans suffer losses at the midterms on 3 November, The Guardian reports, citing a CTV News report.
Hoekstra reportedly told business leaders at a private meeting that if Democrats won swing races in states such as Maine and Michigan, Donald Trump might hold Canada responsible, making relations harder. Prime Minister Mark Carney called it "an interesting way of framing it".
Hoekstra has recently claimed that Canadian officials are meddling in American elections, pointing to criticism of tariffs in American media and an Ontario advertisement aired on US television. Carney said the claims had no merit and that he was disappointed by the envoy's comments. The two countries remain locked in a tariff dispute, and a petition signed by more than 225,000 Canadians has called for Hoekstra's expulsion.
