Huawei has begun presenting its defence in its criminal trial in New York, arguing that its position as a global technology leader comes from its own research and development rather than stolen secrets, the South China Morning Post reports.
Huawei, which is headquartered in Shenzhen, denies all 14 counts in the federal court for the Eastern District of New York. The charges, covering more than two decades, include racketeering conspiracy, bank fraud, wire fraud, theft of trade secrets and alleged breaches of sanctions.
Huawei's lawyers told the court on Wednesday that the firm had no interest in stealing trade secrets. The trial is expected to involve dozens of witnesses and large legal costs on both sides. If convicted, the company could face heavy financial and regulatory penalties in the United States.
