More than half of the wards on Winnipeg city council will be represented by newcomers after Wednesday's civic election, Global News reports.
Four sitting councillors were defeated, in Old Kildonan, St James, Transcona and Mynarski, while five others did not stand again. In Old Kildonan, Greg McFarlane beat Devi Sharma with 56 per cent of the vote. Kelly Ryback unseated Shawn Dobson in St James, and Lora Meseman defeated Russ Wyatt, who faces sexual assault allegations, in Transcona. In Mynarski, Natalie Smith narrowly beat Ross Eadie, a councillor for 16 years, by 31 per cent to 29 per cent.
Mayor Scott Gillingham, who won a second term, said he would help the nine new members settle in and plans to meet the full council to agree priorities.
