Meta settles social media addiction lawsuit weeks before Los Angeles trial

·

Meta has settled a lawsuit accusing it of designing addictive social media platforms, shortly before the case was due to go to trial in Los Angeles, CBS News reports.

The claim was brought by an 18-year-old woman identified as K.D.B., who alleged that Meta and Snap built their apps to encourage compulsive use and harmed her mental health. A second plaintiff settled with Meta last week, and both had earlier reached settlements with TikTok and YouTube. The terms were not disclosed.

Snapchat's owner remains a defendant and disputes the claims. Jury selection began this week, with opening statements expected in early November. Meta, which still faces similar cases, said settlements were common in this kind of test-case litigation and that it would keep defending itself in court.
