Pakistan's military says it is cautiously optimistic about efforts to broker a deal between the United States and Iran, as regional states try to restore a ceasefire in the eight-month war, Al Jazeera reports.
Army spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry told Reuters that the army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, would not have travelled to Tehran twice this month if there were no positive signs. On his latest visit on Monday he was joined by Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, whose countries signed a mutual defence pact with Pakistan in August.
Lt Gen Chaudhry warned that powerful 'spoilers' still believed the conflict served their interests, but did not name them, and declined to say what was discussed or whether Washington backed the trip.
