Judge throws out Trump’s $10bn libel suit against Wall Street Journal over Epstein letter

·

A federal judge in Miami has dismissed Donald Trump's $10bn defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch, PBS NewsHour reports, citing the Associated Press.

District Judge Darrin Gayles ruled that the president had failed to show the defendants acted with actual malice, the legal test for defamation of a public figure, and said the suit was "grasping at straws". The case was dismissed with prejudice, which means it cannot be brought again.

The claim concerned a Journal story about a sexually suggestive letter bearing Mr Trump's name that the paper said was part of a 2003 album compiled for Jeffrey Epstein's 50th birthday. Mr Trump denied writing it. The ruling is a setback for the president, who is involved in several other legal disputes with news organisations.
