A 35-year-old man has been charged with explosives and firearms offences following police searches of properties in north Belfast, The Guardian reports.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the charges include two counts of possessing explosives in suspicious circumstances and having a prohibited weapon designed to discharge electricity or noxious gas. He is expected before Belfast magistrates on Monday.
Officers searched addresses in the Shankill Road and Edwina Street areas on Friday and Saturday. Detective Chief Inspector McCallum said several suspicious devices and other items had been seized for forensic examination. Residents who were moved out as a precaution while army bomb disposal experts worked at the scene have now returned home, and all cordons have been lifted. Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 101.
