The Trump administration is preparing to send Afghans held in US immigration detention back to Afghanistan by way of Pakistan, according to court documents seen by the Associated Press, ABC News reports.
Filings in federal cases in Virginia and Oklahoma show that at least two Afghan immigrants have been scheduled for removal, with a charter flight expected to leave Alexandria, Louisiana, for Pakistan and onward transport to Afghanistan. Flights could begin as early as Monday.
Advocacy groups warn that many of those affected fled the Taliban after working with the US military or aid agencies and could face reprisals. Shawn VanDiver of the group #AfghanEvac called the plan unconscionable. The Department of Homeland Security said Immigration and Customs Enforcement does not discuss future removal operations, and Pakistan's embassy had not responded.
