Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli sealed the Formula 1 drivers' title at the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, becoming the youngest champion in the sport's history at 20, NBC News reports.
Third place in Mexico City was enough to put the title beyond his rivals' reach with four races still to go, in only his second season in F1. He beats the record Sebastian Vettel set in 2010 at 23, and becomes Italy's first world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the race, ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who started from pole. Antonelli's teammate George Russell, who began the year as favourite, finished sixth after a ten-second penalty for a collision. Antonelli has won nine of this season's 19 races and has led the standings since the third round.
