Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens has provoked anger in her party by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers for the US Senate on the eve of Tuesday's midterm elections, The Guardian reported. Stevens narrowly lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed and announced her switch after a dispute with his campaign over an outside group's advert blaming high living costs on US support for Israel. His campaign had disinvited her from an event.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called the move a despicable betrayal, and former House speaker Nancy Pelosi and New York mayor Zohran Mamdani also criticised her. Donald Trump praised the endorsement. El-Sayed's campaign said it raised more than $2.4m on Sunday, a record for the closing days of the race, with over 26,000 new donors. Stevens told CNN she still wanted Democrats to win the Senate.
