Canada's privacy commissioner, Philippe Dufresne, has told the Senate that the government's lawful access legislation still needs further amendments to protect Canadians' privacy, CBC News reported. The Senate national security committee has begun examining Bill C-22, which would give police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service quicker access to digital information during investigations.
The bill would lower the threshold for obtaining basic subscriber details such as names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses from reasonable grounds to believe to reasonable grounds to suspect an offence. Dufresne said the definition of subscriber information, and the range of organisations that could be asked for it, remained too broad, noting it could cover health providers, lawyers, banks and dating apps. He urged narrowing the definition and limiting requests to telecoms firms.
