Families of apartheid-era victims have placed a handwritten index before South Africa's Khampepe commission that they say supports former prosecutor Anton Ackermann's claim that a key 2006 memorandum was forged, Daily Maverick reports.
The inquiry is examining why cases referred by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission were not prosecuted. Ackermann, who led the unit set up to handle those cases, told the commission in March that an internal note dated 2006 had been altered to portray him as a rogue prosecutor intent on arresting then president Thabo Mbeki and other ANC leaders.
In an affidavit, attorney Asmita Thakor, representing the families, said the index, seen during an inspection at police offices in Pretoria in June, shows the decision in question was taken in 2003. She said the families were concerned the document had not previously been put before the commission by its evidence leaders.
