Tusk vows no compromise on Poland’s constitutional court shake-up after protests

·

Poland's prime minister, Donald Tusk, has used a televised address to insist he will push ahead with a disputed overhaul of the country's constitutional court, The Guardian reports.

The row escalated on Friday when government-backed judges moved to take procedural control of the tribunal and suspended its chief judge and deputy, who were appointed under the former Law and Justice government. Protests followed overnight, riot police guarded the building and President Karol Nawrocki, who is aligned with the opposition, entered the court to intervene.

Mr Tusk said the court as shaped by Law and Justice had never been a genuine court and criticised the president for going into the building. The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights called the legal basis for the suspension questionable. The clash comes ahead of a closely fought parliamentary election next year.
