FBI agents have started contacting donors to Dan J. Sullivan, the Alaska Senate candidate who shares a name with the Republican incumbent, as a federal criminal inquiry widens, PBS NewsHour reports, citing the Associated Press.
Agents have approached donors in at least two remote Alaska communities and in Massachusetts. An Anchorage-based agent visited a boat dealership in Petersburg, the fishing town where the candidate lives, and asked whether the owner felt misled about which candidate he had backed. The donor, who gave $500, said he had known the candidate for years as a teacher and musician and did not feel misled.
The visits follow confirmation of the criminal probe and a Justice Department request on Friday for a court to set aside some Alaska ballots over possible voter confusion.
