Survey finds Chinese scientists least satisfied with jobs but most upbeat on careers

·

A survey reported by the South China Morning Post suggests researchers in China are the least content with their work of any major scientific nation, yet more hopeful about their futures than peers in Britain and the United States.

The poll, published in October by the journal Nature, gathered 3,882 responses from 133 countries, covering both academia and industry. Of the 157 people who responded from China, 51 per cent reported being happy in their jobs, a drop of 24 per cent on the 2018 figure.

Even so, the Chinese participants expressed more confidence than their American and British colleagues about achieving successful careers. The researchers note that respondents selected themselves, so the results should not be read as representative of Chinese scientists as a whole.
