Wrangling over seats for the coming Melaka state election has exposed tensions in both of Malaysia's main political partnerships, CNA reports.
The Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional partnership goes into the contest with momentum after wins in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, and analysts expect it to deal another blow to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. But leaders of the Malaysian Chinese Association walked out of Barisan Nasional's candidate launch last Saturday, saying the party had been sidelined; it is understood to have been given two seats, down from seven last time.
Anwar's Pakatan Harapan faces its own strains over possible cooperation with Bersatu, the former ally whose 2020 defection helped bring down its federal government. A former Melaka chairman of the Democratic Action Party has threatened to quit rather than accept a pact. Nomination day is on Saturday.
