The Madras High Court has ordered Tamil Nadu's Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise to say whether rules will be introduced for licensing bars in hotels and clubs close to schools and colleges, The Hindu reports.
Justice N Ramesh made the order while hearing an anticipatory bail plea from a 19-year-old student accused of fighting with fellow students while drinking at a bar in a hotel next to his college near Chennai. The hotel is reportedly run by the college management.
The judge added the commissioner as a respondent and asked for details of the bar's licence, whether any guidelines set a minimum distance from educational institutions, hostels or places of worship, and how far the bar is from the campus. He also asked whether the number of students nearby was considered before the licence was granted or renewed.
