Fiji appoints Rabuka associate as its third attorney-general since 2022

·

Fiji has sworn in Sevuloni Valenitabua as attorney-general, the third person to hold the post under Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s coalition, RNZ Pacific reports.

The appointment at State House in Suva on Tuesday follows the resignation of Siromi Turaga, who stepped down days after an explicit video appeared on his Facebook page. His predecessor, Graham Leung, was sacked in May 2025.

Valenitabua has close professional ties to the prime minister. He chaired the Constitutional Review Commission this year, and his son is Mr Rabuka’s personal lawyer. RNZ Pacific also obtained a selection panel report showing he was passed over in 2024 for the post of anti-corruption commissioner, partly over a heart condition. The government said he brings wide legal experience across Fiji and the Pacific. RNZ asked the prime minister’s office for comment.
