Fire and Emergency New Zealand says a blaze at a Kāinga Ora state housing unit in Mount Albert, Auckland, early on Monday is being treated as suspicious, RNZ reports.

Crews were called to the duplex on Tasman Avenue shortly after 2am and found the fire well established. Three fire engines attended. There were early fears that someone was inside, but nobody was found once the fire was out.

Separately, firefighters dealt with a large fire at a two-storey house on Shah Place in Glen Eden on Sunday night. The building, which appeared to have been abandoned, was well alight when crews arrived, and five engines were needed at the peak. Firefighters stayed until about 3am to protect nearby homes. No injuries were reported, and investigators were due back on Monday to establish the cause.
