Brazil's supreme court has barred the senator Flávio Bolsonaro from leaving the country and ordered him to surrender his passports, hours after he lost the presidential run-off to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, The Guardian reports.
The order came from Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversaw the coup trial of his father, the former president Jair Bolsonaro. It refers to a federal police investigation into his possible involvement in a money-laundering scheme linked to betting companies, and bars contact with a lawyer friend. All his passports, including a diplomatic one, must be handed in within 24 hours.
Mr Bolsonaro said in a video the ruling followed his brother Eduardo's suggestion that he should leave Brazil if defeated, which he denied supporting. He will lose his Senate seat, and its special legal protections, early next year.
