Former Malaysian prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has agreed to support Anwar Ibrahim's government in parliament, the South China Morning Post reports, in a surprise move shortly before the 2027 budget cleared its first vote on Thursday.
Muhyiddin, who led the country from 2020 to 2021 and helped topple Anwar's alliance six years ago, was one of 13 opposition and independent MPs who pledged their backing. Parliament then approved the 459.8 billion ringgit (about US$111 billion) spending plan at the policy stage by a voice vote, with no recorded tally.
Muhyiddin says he remains a member of the opposition party Bersatu and that his support for the budget is in the national interest. The deal has raised questions over whether he could become an election partner for the prime minister.
