A senior lawyer has told the Madras High Court that police barged into his Chennai office on Monday to arrest his client, former Tamil Nadu school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, The Hindu reports.
P Wilson said about 40 officers arrived in three vans while they were discussing legal options after the court had refused Mr Poyyamozhi anticipatory bail, and asked whether India was becoming a police state. He called for a standard procedure on such arrests.
The DMK politician faces allegations of collecting more than ₹400 crore as a party fund from over 177 private school managements. State prosecutors denied he was arrested inside the office, saying officers had waited outside for about 90 minutes and were invited in by his own lawyer, a claim the lawyer rejected.
