France's weekend protests passed without the widespread looting and damage seen a week earlier, after the government deployed about 70,000 police and security personnel, the National Post reports.
Clashes still broke out at the edges of marches, where hundreds of masked people confronted officers who responded with tear gas and water cannon. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez blamed the far left and said the authorities would stay on alert. The Interior Ministry said 1,314 people had been arrested by Sunday morning, around half the previous weekend's total.
Soldiers guarded sensitive sites, some cities banned marches, the Louvre closed and a Paris Saint-Germain match against Lyon was postponed.
The movement began last month with school pupils protesting over teacher numbers, building repairs and the Parcoursup university admissions system. Further protests are planned for 31 October, and unions have called a national day of strikes on 5 November.
