Kyiv Independent says it was hit by suspected Russian cyberattack

·

The Ukrainian news outlet the Kyiv Independent says it was targeted by a cyberattack on 4 November that disrupted its website and sent fake messages to some readers. According to the outlet, hackers got into its content management system and one of the services it uses to send newsletters, and the content of the false claims points to a Russian operation.

Four emails in Russian and English were sent, including one in the early hours claiming falsely that President Volodymyr Zelensky had fired a nuclear weapon at Kyiv. Similar posts appeared on the website and were removed by staff. Editor-in-chief Olga Rudenko said it was the first attack of its kind on the outlet. It said members' payment details were not at risk, and noted similarities with a hack of Ukraine's air raid alert app three days earlier.
