Flood fears ease in Andhra Pradesh as cyclone inflows at Velagaleru regulator fall

·

Officials in Andhra Pradesh's NTR district say there is no flood threat after heavy rain from Cyclone Murasu pushed water levels up at the Velagaleru regulator on the Budameru rivulet, The Hindu reports. Inflows peaked at 5,500 cusecs on Wednesday and had dropped to about 4,174 cusecs by the evening, well below the structure's 15,000-cusec capacity and far less than the 20,000 cusecs officials had feared.

All the water was diverted into the Krishna river rather than the Budameru channel, which runs through Vijayawada. Rain eased overnight on Tuesday, although Tiruvuru recorded 166.8mm and Vijayawada about 128mm. District Collector G. Lakshmisha inspected bridges and regulators, said drones were being used to monitor the area, and urged residents to rely on official updates rather than rumours on social media.
