India beat New Zealand by five wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain-affected opening match of their five-game one-day international series, 1News reports. Virat Kohli scored 74 and Shubman Gill 37 in a stand of 113 that took India to a revised target of 143 with plenty of overs to spare.
New Zealand, put in to bat, were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs, with Arshdeep Patel taking four wickets and Gurnoor Brar three. Several New Zealand batters fell playing the pull shot, and none built a substantial partnership. Repeated showers interrupted India's chase, with the target cut twice. Rohit Sharma was out without scoring in the first over before Kohli and Gill took control. Kohli's half-century was the 80th of his one-day career.
