A Mexican federal judge has been arrested over an alleged US$2 million bribe to grant bail to Andrew Clark, the Canadian alleged deputy of former Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding, CTV News reports, citing the US Justice Department.
Luis Benitez Alcantara, 49, of Mexico City, is charged over a February 2025 decision to release Clark. US investigators say Clark was second-in-command of a transnational cocaine organisation supplying Canada and operating in Colombia, Mexico and the United States. Clark, 36, was arrested in Mexico in October 2024 on US drug trafficking and murder-related charges that also named Wedding.
Benitez Alcantara oversaw Clark extradition proceedings. The case deepens the cross-border prosecution of the Wedding network.
