Myanmar releases first images of Suu Kyi in two months after King Charles sends package

·

Myanmar's military-backed government says it has delivered a package from King Charles III to the detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and has released the first pictures of her in two months, Al Jazeera reports.

According to the presidential spokeswoman, home ministry officials met Suu Kyi on Monday and handed over two books about soil together with sealed correspondence from the British monarch. The two photos released show her meeting two men whose backs are to the camera. On Tuesday officials described her as a "special female prisoner", a term not used before.

Suu Kyi was removed in the 2021 coup that set off a civil war in which more than 100,000 people have died, according to the monitor ACLED. Coup leader Min Aung Hlaing became civilian president in April. Britain and others have called for her release, which the government has rejected.
