Nigeria plans to work with Sahel juntas to reshape Lake Chad task force

·

Nigeria's military says it is working on plans with the military-led governments of the Sahel to reshape the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), the regional coalition set up to fight Boko Haram around Lake Chad, Premium Times reports.

Defence spokesperson Maj Gen Samaila Uba told a security briefing in Abuja on Thursday that a regional forum of past and current force commanders, academics and other experts had discussed the task force's future and the effects of the Alliance of Sahel States leaving the West African bloc Ecowas.

The MNJTF was formed in 2015 with Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin. Niger stopped taking part after joining the alliance with Mali and Burkina Faso, which all quit Ecowas after coups. Uba said results of the talks would be seen soon.
