Nigerian lawmakers propose 74 extra National Assembly seats for women

·

Nigeria's National Assembly Constitution Review Committee has proposed creating 74 additional seats reserved for women in the Senate and House of Representatives, according to a report carried by AllAfrica. The plan would add 37 seats to each chamber, giving every state and the Federal Capital Territory one extra women's seat in both houses.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, vice chairman of the Senate's constitution review committee, outlined the proposal on Monday at a Law Week event organised by the Ekiti State chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers. He said the committee had also proposed three extra seats for women in each state House of Assembly, without removing any existing constituencies. Women make up nearly half of Nigeria's population but have historically held only a small share of seats in the federal legislature.
